Piercing Aftercare
Taking Care of Your New Piercing
Good aftercare is the difference between a smooth heal and a problem piercing. You'll receive a printed aftercare sheet before you leave. Here's the overview:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap before touching your piercing
- Clean the piercing twice a day with a mild fragrance-free antimicrobial soap and rinse well
- A sea salt soak can help: 1/4 teaspoon non-iodized sea salt dissolved in one cup of warm water, applied with a clean cloth for 3–5 minutes
- Follow up with sterile saline solution or clean water
- Don't twist, turn, or play with the jewelry — leave it alone between cleanings
- Keep bedding, clothing, and anything that contacts the piercing clean
- Don't remove jewelry until fully healed — the hole can close quickly
Things to avoid:
- Rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or bacitracin — these hinder healing
- Pools, lakes, hot tubs, and open water during healing
- Oral contact or bodily fluids during healing
What's normal:
Some redness, swelling, and a pale yellowish discharge that crusts around the jewelry is part of the healing process. Don't pick at it.
Healing times vary:
Inner mouth: 6–8 weeks
Lip/face: 3–6 months
Earlobe: 6–8 weeks external, 3–6 months full
Cartilage: 6–12 months or longer
Navel, dermal, and surface: 6–12 months

Downsizing
Downsizing is a crucial step in the healing process. When you get a new piercing, the initial jewelry is intentionally longer to allow for swelling. Once that swelling goes down — typically 2 to 4 weeks for oral piercings and 4 to 6 weeks for cartilage — it's time to come back in and swap to a shorter post.
That switch reduces movement, prevents irritation and snagging, and supports proper healing for a more comfortable experience overall. Don't skip it.
